Pekka Himaneni 2004. aasta raport Soome Parlamendile - arvustus

Challenges of the Global Information Society

Pekka Himanen (born November 19, 1973) is a Finnish philosopher. He studied philosophy at the University of Helsinki and computer science as a minor. Pekka Himanen is the youngest PhD in Finland.

In 2004, he presented a report to the Finnish Parliament on world economic models and technologies. The author was able to anticipate many of today's problems.

Pekka has outlined three main models of economics and technology:

  • Silicon Valley (American) model
  • Singapore (Asian) model
  • European (Finnish) model

The author focused on the latter model and thought that a person could develop, and the favourable conditions for development in the later model are tolerance, trust, and creativity. In his opinion, a person must learn and grow throughout his life. Himanen points out that the population is ageing very fast, following the example of Europe. To compensate for this, it offers immigration and foreign labour growth and multicultural society.

Mainly Pekka Himanen proposes to make the European model competitive using these 4 features:
  • Creative economy - Europe cannot compete with Asia's cheap labour. The only way is to involve creativity in production, which would add value to goods.
  • Creative welfare state - European society is ageing, and therefore the current system needs to be reformed to ensure its sustainability in the future.
  • Human development - is necessary to find a social, physical, mental, and cultural balance at work to have less stress and illness.
  • Global culture - As the population ages and shrinks, it is necessary to accept foreign labour to maintain an age balance. Tolerance should then be the norm.
