A Constructive Proposal For Copyright Reform

In Christian Engström's and Rick Falkvinge's book - The Case for Copyright Reform, chapter 2 - A Constructive Proposal For Copyright Reform, are described six points that can help to set all non-commercial copying and use free, and also to shorten the commercial protection time. Interesting fact, in parallel, authors want to keep the commercial exclusivity in a way that allows most business models that are viable today to continue to work.

  • Moral Rights Unchanged

I agree with the authors that the work of another person or persons must always be referred to. This is a popular issue on the Internet today. I suppose that mostly this problem exists in the entertainment industry.

  • Free Non-Commercial Sharing

Book's writers think that the author should share his work for free for personal gain. Maybe here the author could decide for himself whether to distribute his work for free or to charge for it.

  • 20 Years Of Commercial Monopoly

Under the current Copyright Act, the right for work is valid for the life of the author and for 70 years after his death. Logically, copyright could be shorter and last until the death of the author.

  • Registration After 5 Years

In this point suggested that copyright protection arises automatically, but if owners want to continue to exercise his commercial exclusivity of work must register their self and their right within 5 years. This is definitely a solution to the situation where the author has not been found, but the work is under copyright protection.

  • Free Sampling

This chapter addresses the issue where authors want to create new work using someone's own material. Supposedly, it could be a place of different discussions, and the existing author could decide whether or not to allow his work to be used.

  • A Ban on DRM

DRM (Digital rights management) prevents the copying of works that you have purchased, such as games, music, movies or others. On the one hand, it may help to combat piracy, on the other hand, it is not fair and convenient for the user.
